How a Conformateur Works
A conformateur sits on the head like a wide, hinged crown. Its edge is lined with a row of small, independently sliding pins. When it’s pressed down, each pin retreats by a different amount depending on the exact contour beneath it at that point — flatter at the back of the head, more curved elsewhere, and so on. Lift it off, and the pins hold that pattern. A built-in mechanism then transfers the pin pattern onto a piece of card or paper as a punched or traced outline: a genuine 1:1 map of that person’s head shape, ready to check a block against or trace directly onto a pattern.
Why This Matters More Than a Tape Measure
Two heads can share the exact same circumference and still be shaped completely differently — more oval, more round, asymmetric, higher at the crown. A hat blocked purely to a circumference number can fit loosely in one spot and pinch in another on a head with an unusual shape. A conformateur-derived outline catches that variation before a single piece of felt is steamed, which is why it remains standard practice for genuinely bespoke, made-to-measure hat making and for historical costume reproduction where an accurate period fit matters.
